World Series by Renault Spa 2011

During the final weekend of the month April the World Series of Renault once again settled down at the

legendary Spa-Francorchamps circuit. Perfect weather conditions and a vast crowd were just a few

ingredients for a another perfect race weekend.

Formula Renault 3.5

Robert Wickens scored his first win of the season during the first race on Saturday. The Canadian drove a

perfect start-finish victory, three seconds in front of hits team mate Jean-Eric Vergne. Third place on the

podium was claimed by Albert Costa. It was Wickens second pole of the season and right from the hairpin

at La Source he took the lead, followed closely by Costa and Vergne. Costa tried to overtake Wickens in

the entry at Les Combes but without any success. Vergne took second place during this action. During

the final laps of the race it seemed that Vergne could close in on his team mate but Wickens responded

with quicker lap times and claimed his first win of the season.

During the second race on Sunday Jean-Eric Vergne was the man to beat. The former British F3 champion

claimed pole position for race 2 but it was Robert Wickens who made the best start. Wickens remained in

front for seventeen laps but a small mistake in La Source gave Vergne the opportunity to close in. Finally

Vergne claimed the lead in Les Combes and took his maiden win of the season. Former Superleague

Formula driver Chris v.d. Drift finished third.

Eurocup Megane Trophy

Swiss driver Stefano Comini scored his third win in three races during the first race of the Eurocup Megane

Trophy on Saturday. Starting from pole he took an early lead, but Bas Schothorst tried to overtake the

Swiss driver in Les Combes what resulted in a drop back in the field. Due to this action Comini´s team mate

Niccolo Nalio took second place, followed by Wim Beelen, Dimitri Enjalbert, Fabien Thuner and Michele

Faccin. Bas Schothorst race ended in drama. The Dutchman took a hit from Faccin what resulted in a

damaged rear axle. During the climb of Eau Rouge Schothorst lost control of his damaged Megane and

had a huge impact in the armco. The safety car had to be deployed and once again the lights went to

green Comini had to battle it out with a very determined Dimitri Enjalbert. Stefano Comini claimed his

third victory of the season in front of Dimitri Enjalbert and Fabien Thuner.

The second race on Sunday was almost a copy of the first race. Stefano Comini took another pole position,

made the best start and finished with a fourth victory in four races! TDS Racing managed a great job

rebuilding Bas Schothorst heavily damaged Megane. The second race proved to be another misery as

Schothorst ended in the kitty litter chasing Stefano Comini. Dimitri Enjalbert claimed his second podium of

the weekend, Michele Faccin finished third.

Eurocup Formula Renault 2.0

Son of the legendary former rally world champion Carlos Sainz, Carlos Sainz Jr. claimed his maiden victory in

the Eurocup Formula Renault 2.0 during the first race on Saturday. The start of the race was once again

chaotic, a common sight in the Formula Renault series. Robin Frijns claimed pole position followed by Sainz

Jr. en Danill Kyvat. Frijns lead only lasted for four laps, in the mean time Sainz Jr. overtook team mate

Kyvat and finally claimed the lead. The safetycar had to be deployed due to several damaged cars in Les

Combes. As the field consisted out of no less than 47 cars, a big pile up occurred in Eau Rouge. One of the

drivers, Gregoire Demoustier left the pitlane with quite some speed, couldn´t see the swarm of Formula

Renaults and crashed into one of the collegue drivers. In the eind Sainz Jr. claimed his first podium in front

of Will Stevens and Robin Frijns. The second race on Sunday would become a treat for Danill Kyvat. The

young Russian driver finished 1.1 second ahead of Will Stevens and Carlos Sainz Jr.

Eurocup Clio

Nicolas Milan became winner of both the Eurocup Clio races. Marc Guilot and Sebastiaan Bleekmolen claimed

second and third spot on Saturday. On Sunday Marc Guilot and Simone di Luca shared the podium.
